UNIZULU hosts First year Engineering Students Seminar<\/h2>\n\n\n

The teaching and learning Centre at the university of Zululand organized a seminar for first year students. The Engineering Student Seminar event themed \u201cTraining future engineers today\u201d was a comprehensive programme designed to introduce and orientate first-year students to the different industries and unique aspects of life working as engineers. It was aimed also at capacitating and empowering first-year engineering students with the relevant knowledge and acumen there would need in the engineering field.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event took place at the Richards Bay Campus on Friday the 17th<\/sup> September.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different companies focused their presentation on what engineers do on daily basis and what job opportunities are there when students have completed their 4year program. They also shared information on bursaries and internship opportunities available to students<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her welcoming address the Director of Teaching and Learning Centre Professor Sewela Mabusela, she explained what the Teaching and Learning Centre does, how they support students on mentoring, coaching as well as academic writing amongst other things.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cyou are welcomed at the University of Zululand, the first year of study could be the most interesting and rewarding period of your life. We hope you make the most of this opportunity, you are welcomed at the Centre of teaching and Learning. Today you are going to be given an opportunity to mingle with the future employer. \u201cexplain Prof Mabusela.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Betty Kibirige, the Coordinator for the department of Engineering, in her giving the purpose of the day, she thanked the director teaching and learning for the opportunity to have a seminar that is going to expose the students on what to expect at the end of their development. \u201cWe are here to meet the people from the industry to come and share with you that it is possible, to give you pointers on what could work and what would not work. Tell you about what excites them about being an engineers, the environment they work in. I am hoping that they will motivate you to keep working.\u201d Said Dr Kibirige.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were variety of industry partners who addressed the students. Some were addressing them virtual. There was Bell Equipment, Transnet, Shola Consulting, RBM as well as South 32.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lindokuhle Mkize, the student academic support, organizer of the event said, \u201cindeed the event was a resounding success as we had over 80% of first-year engineering students in attendance. \u201cHe ended.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\nPrecious Shamase\n\n\n\nSeptember 28, 2021\n\n\n
